the one with the Pileated Woodpecker

Let me preface this post by saying that I am a seriously nutty bird watcher (as in, I like to watch birds).
On top of that, this particular bird has avoided every attempt I've ever made at capturing it on film.
The Pileated Woodpecker (Woody Woodpecker to those who know cartoons).
It is a most delightfully large woodpecker with the most jauntiest of all scarlet plumes.
Finally, I was in the right place at the right time (and with a camera!) to snap a few shots of the ever elusive Woody. They are shy birds, and don't much like being watched or photographed. If I had had a better camera, and the light was more to my liking, the photos I took would have made me bliss out.
As it is, only one photo turned out even remotely well.
But it's a photo of a Pileated Woodpecker.
And that made my day a good one.

Grace was none too pleased that I dashed out of the house in a flurry of must-take-photo-of-elusive-woodpecker-nownownownow spazziness. I caught her watching me, quite dejectedly, inside the house.

  1. i love pilated woodpeckers! :) thanks for sharing.

  2. oh wow!

that crimson fauxhawk is the finest hairdo i've seen in quite some time.

    what a great experience! :)

  3. That's a beautiful picture - I love that the dark tones reflect how cool and shy they are. And Gracie is just so adorable.

  4. Wow, what a cool little birdie! I was raised in a bird watching house, all my holidays as a kid revolved around my dad wanting to cross something off his bird list.

  5. great photo! & I ❤❤❤ that you used the word "jauntiest"!
& poor Grace, rejected for a bird brained bird! ;^D
